I have a gardening tip to help protect our wetlands. When you are shopping for compost, it is better to make sure it’s peat-free. Peat is derived from a natural habitat called peatlands. They help play an essential role in preventing climate change by storing and absorbing carbon. Peatlands also decrease flood risks and supply drinking water while supporting rare wildlife. Since it takes thousands of years for this ecosystem to form, peat is not a sustainable resource for gardening. Fortunately, there are many renewable alternatives. Bark, wood chips, coconut fibre (coir), and garden waste all provide excellent nutrients for plants. Some composites containing peat emphasize the words “natural” or “organic,” but that does not mean they’re sustainable. It is best that the label on the package explicitly states that the compost is peat-free. If you still aren’t sure which product to purchase, you can ask your local retailer about their peat-free alternatives. This will bring awareness to the growing demand for more sustainable choices.
