“Instead of spending your time thinking nonsense sometimes, or feeling sad about something, just go and plant a pot of flowers, fruits, and vegetables. Spend your energy on something conducive, and then you’ll feel happy. We are made from earth and water anyway. So, if you are in contact with earth and water, that also makes you feel like you are in your element. You naturally feel happy.”

While we can grow many types of foods, some vegetables are easier to cultivate and produce an abundance of food. Beans, for example, are perfect for beginner and intermediate gardeners. “Beans are a super rewarding crop to grow, in part because they fix their own nitrogen.” You can grow beans in pots and keep them indoors in bad weather or in an emergency. It’s important to use heirloom or open-pollinated, non-hybrid seeds so that you can save the seeds after the beans grow and plant them later.

During an international gathering, our Most Beloved Supreme Master Ching Hai (vegan), encouraged our Association members to grow their own food and gave us tips on growing vegetables and fruits without fertilizers and little water.

For being self-sufficient in an emergency, growing potatoes can give you plenty of food. Even if you have limited space, you can still produce a bountiful potato harvest by growing them in pots or trash bags.
